Session Rates & Payment

Rates     $120 per 45-minute session

Longer sessions may be recommended by Mr. Nagel or requested by an individual client or a couple.  For example, initial 90-minute sessions for clinical hypnosis and couples therapy are often recommended.  The rates for these extended sessions will be based on the usual therapeutic session rate.

What every consumer needs to know about using health insurance:

Like most people, I really appreciate having health insurance.  In fact, I had to have several medical procedures in the past year and I was really grateful to have my health insurance cover most of the medical expenses for those procedures.  Most people are aware of the benefits of using insurance for behavioral health coverage but need to know the risks of using health insurance as payment for therapy. I'd like to tell you about those risks now.

In order to use your health insurance, I have to give you a mental disorder diagnosis.  And then depending on your insurance company, I may have to write a report after so many sessions to indicate that you are still sick with that mental disorder diagnosis and you are getting better but not too much better.  Then someone at the insurance company who doesn't know either of us is going to decide how well we are working together.  They are going to evaluate our work together and they will decide whether they are going to continue to pay for us to continue to work together.  And I don't know about you, but I think that you and I should make that decision about how well things are going and not someone at the insurance company who doesn't know either of us.  And then, when I send in that report, we actually have no idea who is looking at it.  And I feel uncomfortable having your information, the personal stuff you have shared with me, outside of this office.  Your privacy is very, very important to me.  While your insurance provider will promise your privacy, I can't guarantee your privacy once things are out of my hands.  So for those reasons, because I don’t like labeling anyone with a mental disorder and because I don’t want that in your records and I don’t want that information out. That’s why I prefer not to take insurance for therapy. Now, as I said, we use insurance ourselves, my family and I do. We use insurance for certain things and if you believe that based on all of that, you still want to use your insurance, I totally understand and we absolutely can bill your insurance to help pay part of the fees. On the flip side, if you’d rather not use your insurance, you can pay me directly instead.  That way you and I can decide how to work together and keep your information between us.
